Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between virtual and physical deployment?
Our Entry and Mid level servers are deployed as dedicated virtual servers. Each virtual server (between two and four per host machine depending on specification) is allocated dedicated memory and dedicated CPU cores, guaranteeing the performance of your allocated specification — and ensuring you get what you are paying for. The underlying Xen® hypervisor (virtualisation technology) supports absolute resource isolation between each server, resulting in the highest levels of security possible in a virtualised environment. Simply put, the performance of your own virtual server will not be impacted by the activities of other accounts.
Our Enterprise and Enterprise Plus level servers are deployed as dedicated physical servers - the chassis and hardware is yours, and yours alone.
What does your managed service option include?
Our managed service is designed for the "plug and play" approach with simple browser-based management. If you opt for a managed server we will install the Parallels™ Pro (an additional £10/month for a 20 domain license) or CPanel / WHM (an additional £150/year) control panel on your server - a secure browser based administration tool that simplifies the management of day to day server administration (such as creating and managing hosting/email accounts). In addition, our technical staff will be responsible for ensuring the security of the control panel software and operating system, along with automatic weekly backups.
What does your unmanaged service include?
Our unmanaged service is suited to experienced system administrators who need full control. We will provide a bare system with the operating system of your choice pre-installed, giving you have the freedom to install what you want, when you want. Although you are responsible for installing and updating any software on the server, you will still benefit from the protection of our border firewalls.
Can you provide dedicated Ruby on Rails hosting?
We can provide Ruby on Rails support (Phusion Passenger™ LAMP stack) as part of a managed dedicated server package. Please see our Rails FAQs for further details about our Rails hosting service.
What if I need more bandwidth than you advertise with your packages?
If you require bandwidth over and above the amount allocated to your package, we can provide additional bandwidth at the following rates:
